Western Corn Rootworm

Western Corn Rootworm

Western Corn Rootworm BeetleWhat are those little yellow and black beetles in the corn?

These beetles are Western Corn Rootworm, and they love to eat the silks on the cobs, as well as pollen and flowers of many kinds. The larvae  (not shown) eat corn roots making the plants unstable and drought stricken. Best strategy to prevent root damage is to not plant corn in the same ground more than two years in a row.
